  • What is Jaundice?: Although jaundice is most often the result of a disorder affecting the liver it can be caused by a variety of other conditions affecting for example the blood or spleen. It should be thoroughly investigated so that the underlying cause can be identified and treated.

  • Otters and waterways -the health status of otters: A new parasite Pseudamphistom um truncatum has been discovered in the gallbladder of otters from the Somerset Levels. The flukes live in the gall bladder and cause liver damage & jaundice. Since otters are non-migratory and can only be infected by eating fish, it can be deduced that fish in the area were infected. The parasite is well known in Russia & Eastern Europe where it affects otters and even humans when raw undercooked fish is eaten. In the UK it is thought to have been spread by escaped ornamental fish - the sunbleak and topmouth gudgeon - imported to Romsey, Hampshire in mid 1980's, although mammals imported from affected regions might be implicated. The sunbleak has colonised the Somerset Levels, matching the distribution of the fluke in otters.
